Welcome to Hans Petersen Art

The work of Danish Abstract Expressionist artist Hans Petersen is always a bold aesthetic experience of rousing, innovative, stimulating themes in spiritous colors and textures.  Hans attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen to study architecture.  There his love for abstract expressionism intensified with inspiration from the mid-20th century CoBrA movement, especially Danish artist Asgar Jorn.  To this day, Hans’ work draws on the CoBrA principles of complete freedom of color and form that inject energy and excitement into his work.   Rather than be characterized by a singular style, Hans paints series that have a continuity of his vision.

Hans began his professional life as a graphic designer, moving to New York City in 1976 and became a principal and creative director for a successful design firm. In 1991 Hans relocated to Charlotte, NC, where his innovative graphic design style distinguished the world-renowned Hight Point, NC International Home Furnishing Center’s promotional materials for 15 years.

The creativity that first emerged in grade school art classes with poster paint on butcher paper, matured to a love of abstract expressionism and sustained a successful career in graphic design, compelled Hans in 2005 to pursue painting as a full-time endeavor. Hans’ passion for his art is matched by those who collect and admire the scope of his work.  He is represented by galleries in New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, South Carolina and Florida.

Artist Statement: Painting with impact brings me pleasure.  I strive to infuse distinctive color, energy and character into my work to achieve excitement for myself and others.  If it goes unnoticed, it simply wasn’t worth (while) painting.
